FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Indoor Air Quality/Mold Investigation
What is the cost of a mold investigation?
The cost of these services is dependent on the type of problem and the possible source. A limited investigation of the indoor air quality of a building to include three air samples can typically vary from $500.00 to $ 650.00. More complex problems require additional samples and personnel time
How long do these investigations take?
Depending on the work load and the laboratory turn around time investigations will take between 5 and 10 days from the authorization date. Verbal results can be obtained from 1 to 3 days after the samples are obtained.
If a water leak occurs will I start to see mold immediately?
Generally, mold begins to grow within 8 to 10 days. Mold requires three things to grow a source of moisture, a food source, and to be left alone. If a water leak occurs and receives prompt attention the likelihood of a mold problem starting is greatly reduced.
Is there an amount of mold that does not fall under the Texas Mold Assessment and Remediation Rules?
Mold impacted materials that are less than 25 square feet contiguously are not subject to the Texas Mold Assessment and Remediation Rules.
How much mold can affect my health?
There are NO specified levels of mold/fungi that are considered harmful to humans. Each individual has a different tolerance level for molds/fungi species. In addition, different geographical locations also have a wide variance of air quality levels.
Where can I find licensed firms to do the remediation work?
The TDSHS website www.dshs.state.tx.us/mold is an excellent source of information regarding the rules and licensed firms in the area

Asbestos Survey Questions How much does an asbestos survey cost?
For sites in our local service area, the minimum cost is usually about $300.00. This fee will get you a report that includes testing of three building materials (nine samples). Sometimes the fee is less if we simply find there are no suspect building materials on a particular site. However, this is rare. For the cost to be less than $300.00, you have to have a warehouse or building shell with no sheet rock, floor coverings, or other common materials.
Why does STC test each building material three times?
Three samples are required to refute the presence of asbestos as required by the Texas regulations. Some materials, even from the same manufacturer, can have varying levels of asbestos.
How long does it usually take to complete an asbestos survey?
Usually, about a week from the time we receive the signed proposal. We can usually get you proposal the same day you call STC and give us some building information.
Why do I need an asbestos survey to get a remodeling/construction permit and a Certificate of Occupancy?
Texas State Law now requires municipalities to show proof of an asbestos inspection before issuing certain building permits. In part, this law is designed to protect workers from asbestos exposure during construction and remodeling. These activities are likely to disturb asbestos and make the particles airborne.
